how fat freezing works

Cryolipolysis, often referred to as fat freezing, is a clinically proven, non-invasive method of reducing fat by using controlled cooling to target and destroy fat cells.

The Science Behind It

Fat cells are more sensitive to cold temperatures than other types of tissue. Cryolipolysis takes advantage of this by cooling fat cells to a temperature that crystallises (freezes) and damages them, without harming the skin, muscles, or nerves.

Once frozen, the fat cells go through a natural process called apoptosis (controlled cell death). Your body then gradually breaks down and eliminates these damaged fat cells over the following 6 to 12 weeks through the lymphatic system.

The result is a permanent reduction of fat in the treated area, leaving you with a more sculpted, contoured appearance.

What Happens During a Treatment?

  1. A gel pad and applicator are placed on the target area.

  2. Gentle suction draws the tissue into the applicator.

  3. Controlled cooling is applied to precisely freeze the fat cells.

  4. The area is massaged afterwards to enhance the fat breakdown process.

You may feel pulling, cold, tingling, or slight numbness initially, but this typically fades within a few minutes as the area becomes numb.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

  • Abdomen

  • Flanks ("love handles")

  • Thighs (inner & outer)

  • Upper arms

  • Back fat & bra bulge

  • Under the chin (double chin)

  • Buttocks (banana roll)

  • Calves/ knees

  • Gynecomastia (male chest fat)

The procedure takes 45 minutes once the vacuum device is placed. I would recommend giving yourself 1 hour for set up and finish.

You may feel a pulling or cold sensation for the first few minutes, which usually fades as the area becomes numb. Most clients find the treatment very tolerable.

As the process is non-invasive, it is very low risk; however, in some circumstances, the following temporary side effects may arise:

  • Numbness
  • Bruising
  • Slight swelling
  • Localised hardening of the skin
  • Touch sensitivity
  • Slight to more pronounced redness

You may begin noticing changes from 3–4 weeks, with full results visible around 12 weeks as your body naturally removes the treated fat cells.

Yes, Cryolipolysis is FDA-approved and has been extensively researched. It’s non-invasive, and most people experience little to no downtime.

Yes—once fat cells are destroyed and eliminated, they do not return. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle will ensure long-term results.

Cryolipolysis is ideal for individuals who:

  • Are within 1–2 stone of your ideal weight

  • Have areas of soft, pinchable fat (e.g., abdomen, thighs, flanks, upper arms, chest)

  • Prefer a non-surgical, non-invasive fat reduction treatment

  • Are generally in good health with no serious underlying medical conditions

  • Can maintain a healthy lifestyle to support long-term results

  • Are you looking for a natural, gradual fat reduction over time

  • Want to improve body contour and confidence without downtime

It may not be suitable if you:

While Cryolipolysis is a safe, non-invasive treatment for many, it is not suitable for everyone. Please avoid this treatment if you have or have had any of the following conditions:

  • Liver or kidney problems

  • Heart or lung conditions (including silicosis or use of pacemakers)

  • Physiological hypotonia

  • Cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease

  • Autoimmune or systemic immune system disorders

  • Hypoproteinaemia (low protein levels in the blood)

  • Cold-related conditions (e.g. frostbite intolerance, cryoglobulinemia)

  • Blood clotting disorders

  • Umbilical hernias or weakened abdominal wall

  • Severe or uncontrolled diabetes

  • Recent invasive surgery (within the last 12 months)

  • Pregnancy or immediately postpartum

  • Metal implants or joint replacements in the treatment area

If you are unsure whether Cryolipolysis is right for you, please get in touch for a free consultation to discuss your medical history and suitability.
